Designer Tapio Wirkkala
Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was a versatile design genius, widely regarded as a leading figure of modern Finnish industrial art. As his reputation grew internationally, Wirkala exhibited all over the world, but he was a recluse by nature. His favorite spot was a place so remote in the deep forests of central Finland that helicopters brought prototypes to his cabin, as no car could reach him. It was in nature that he found his beloved solitude and the inspiration for shapes that industry could produce or create works of art.
In 1946, Wirkkala won his first design award in an Iittala-sponsored competition that would mark a lifelong relationship with lasting consequences for his career and the company. As Artistic Director of Iittala, Wirkkala’s unique artistic vision helped establish the company’s worldwide reputation. Throughout his storied career, the uniquely talented artist has created over four hundred glass objects for Iittala, many of which, such as the Ultima Thule and Tapio series, are still popular today.
